2014-2015 School Year
♦ Congratulations to Yusef Kunji for being named a National Merit Finalist.

In the fall of each year approximately 1.5 million students take the PSAT/National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test. From that point about 34,000 students are recognized as Commended Students (Rebecca Richards earned this distinction this year), 16,000 additional students are named National Merit Semi-Finalist (Yusef). From there 15,000 of the semi-finalist students are named Finalist (Yusef). Between March and June 7,600 of those students will be awarded the status of National Merit Winner. Great Job and Congratulations to Yusef!

•Sisters Ilina and Medha Krishen, have developed screening tools using electronic stethoscopes to detect lung and heart disease. The sisters will present their findings at CHEST 2014 in Austin, Texas. [Medical Press article ]

2013-2014 School Year
♦ Audrey Hartson qualified for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. She received a first division rating at Proficiency Level 2 at State MSBOA Solo and Ensemble Festival, which qualified her as a violinist for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Honors Orchestra.

♦ PHASD had 7 students recognized at the All State Awards banquet this Sunday (3/16):

Awards were as follows:
First Team All State: Devin Tomlinson and Breanna Hansen
Second Team All State: Allie Fetterly

Athletic Scholars Awards: Devin Tomlinson, Kayla McIntyre, Justin VanBuskirk, Sam Wagner
Henrick Zetterburg Scholarship was awarded to: Devin Tomlinson (1 girl and 1 boy hockey player were choosen from entire state)


♦ Sophia Ahmed won the Best of Show (1st place) in the SC4 science fair and Aishah Ahmed won Grand Award (2nd place).

Then on March 16, at the Flint Regional Science Fair, Jay Mehta was 1st place finalist, Aishah Ahmed was 2nd Place Finalist, Sophia Ahmed 4th Place Finalist. Jay and Aishah won the trip to ISEF in May to Los Angeles, as participants to compete. Sophia Ahmed won as observer to ISEF.

♦ Alycia Burch (12th grade) and Katie Hunckler (12th grade) were accepted into the Michigan Youth Arts Festival State Competition. They will have their artwork on display from May 8-10th on the campus of Western Michigan University.

The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is "a comprehensive arts spectacular, culminating a nine-month search for the finest artistic talent in Michigan high schools. More than 250,000 students across the state are involved in the adjudication process that results in nearly 1,000 students (this includes all the arts such as dance, instrumental music, theater and the visual arts) being invited to participate in the annual three-day event, held in May. During the Festival, art students' pieces are hung in the Festival show, and students are able to take part in art workshops and to attend diverse activities and performances."


2012-2013 School Year
♦ Jay Mehta won 3rd place at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in the Medical field.

♦ Erin Weber has been awarded the GOLD level Graduating Seniors Award from US Figure Skating. The Graduating Seniors Program recognizes the achievements of those individuals graduating from high school who have made the commitment to continue their training in figure skating while pursuing their academic studies.

♦ National Scholastic Art Awards American Vision Winner Hali Rich-Reid, going to New York
Awards Show at Carnegie Hall.

♦ Audrey Hartson & Patrick Hartson scored a "1" at District and State MSBOA.

♦ Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association 2012-2013 Division 1 Academic All-State Honors:

Individual: Jennifer Bailey (PHN), Amy Finkel (PHN), Abigail Godwin (PHN), Erin Johnson(PHN), Jacob Murfin (PHN)
Team - Boys (PHN): #7 in the State with a team GPA 3.60, Girls (PHN): #3 in the State with a team GPA 3.78

♦ Jay Mehta won First Place in the Flint Regional Science Fair held at Kettering University on march 15-18, 2013. This win included a $2,000 scholarship and a trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Az.

Aishah Ahmed, Medha Krishen and Ilina Krishen all won Fifth Place which included $400 gift cards. Aishah and Ilina also won trips to the ISEF as observers and Medha is an alternate.

♦ Matt Fernandez is named The Times Herald Hockey Player of the Year!

8 high school students from PHN JSA attended the Fall State Convention in Madison, Wisconsin in December 2012, representing Northern High school chapter. There was 352 attendees, all high school students, who debated all two days. Nick Shevnok, a Junior at PHN came home with aBest Speaker Gavel.

♦ Casey Fealko named National Merit Scholar Commended Student



2011-2012 School Year
• Clay Kimball has been offered a Merit Scholarship by The University of Texas at Dallas.

• PHN Girls Basketball Team: Awarded 1st Team - Team Academic All State GPA 3.74
(6th highest in state - Class A). Second year in a row for the honor. Last year 3rd in the state.

• PHN 10th Grade Destination Imagination Team coached by Phil Kohanov took 1st Place in the State Tournament and qualified for the Global Tournament.

• Laura Rusch & Shelby Rummel-Knott were silver award winners National Scholastic Art Show and will be going to Award Show in NY at Carnegie Hall.

• Nithin Tumma, First Place $100,000 2012 Intel Science Talent Search.

• William Lobb was accepted to U of M Saxophone Program. He was the only student that U U of M has taken into this program this year.

• Clay Kimball and Nithin Tumma are both finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

• Ishan Mehta - Candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars Program
This program honors some of our Nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. As a candidate, Ishan is now eligible for selection as one of the 500 semifinalists.

• Nithin Tumma - Port Huron Northern High School is pleased to announce that Nithin Reddy Tumma, a 12th grade student was chosen as one of the 300 Semi-Finalist from 1,839 entrants for the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search. From that select pool, Nithin was one of the 40 finalists invited to Washington, DC in March to undergo final judging, display his work to the public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for the top award of $100,000.


Laura Rusch - received two gold keys and one silver key from the Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Her two gold key artworks are going to be judged in New York. We will not know for another month or so if it made it into the National show yet. She also received the "American Vision Award" for her ceramic dog called "Fido". It is considered "Best of Show" . Her American Vision Award ceramic dog is going to be judged separately in New York and she has a 1 in 5 chance to be selected from our region to get the national recognition. (1-16-2012)

Shelby Rummel-Knott- received a gold key from the Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Now her artwork is going to be judged in New York. We will find out in a month or so if it made it into the national show. (1-16-2012)

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published.

Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards continue to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.

Regional Awards

• Gold Key: The highest level of achievement on the regional level. Approximately 7 - 10% of all regional submissions are recognized with Gold Key Awards and all are considered for national-level recognition.

• Silver Key: Approximately 10 - 15% of all regional submissions are recognized with Silver Key Awards.

• Honorable Mention: This Award recognizes students with artistic potential. Approximately 15 - 20% of all regional submissions receive Honorable Mention Awards.

• American Visions & Voices Nominees: Five works are selected out of all Gold Key works (across categories) as the "Best of Show" for each region.

National Awards

• Gold Medal: The most outstanding works in the nation.

• Silver Medal: Works demonstrating high honors on the national level.

• American Visions & Voices Medal: An esteemed panel of jurors selects the best of the five American Voices & Visions Nominees from each region to receive national recognition with the American Visions & Voices Medal.


• Amy Zimmer received a full scholarship from Winthrop University for Volleyball.

• Patrick Hartson attended district and state MSBOA Solo and Ensemble Festival and scored a 1 for Proficiency Level 1 at 95% as cello soloist and was therefore invited to participate in the 49th Annual Michigan Youth Arts Festival on May 12-14 in Kalamazoo.

• Morgan L. Smith is the recipient of the 2011-2012 NSF Scientific Computing Scholarship from Calvin College.

• Society of Women Engineers presented the Madame Curie Award to Meagan Prax. This award is given to an outstanding junior female who shows exemplary ability in mathematics and science classes.


• Northern Powerlifting members were first team all-state. Tyler Smith (1st place), Ryan Bostwick (2nd place), Kevin Nguyen (3rd place), Brandon Adair (4th place), Morgan Smith (4th place), Dillon Forrest (5th place), Caulder Renno (5th place), Alex Nelson (6th place), Dustin Harvey (7th place) and Brandon Pojeky (8th place). Tyler Smith set a State Record in Deadlift with a lift of 495 pounds.


• Ishan Mehta earned the highest composite score of 36 on the ACT college admissions and placement exam. Among the high school graduatinglass of 2010, nearly 1.6 million graduates took the ACT. Of that number, just 588 students earned a score of 36.


• Nithin Tumma will be attending The Simons Summer Research Fellowship Program from June 27th to August 12th at Stony Brook University in New York.


• Will Lobb, Jason Rodriguez, Katie Hunt & Maria Vitale (Sax Quartet) were selected to audition for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival.


• 15th Annual Chess Tournament Trophy Winners: 9th Grade-Matt Romzek and 10th Grade-Steven Fagan.

• Flint Science Fair Winners: Nithin Tumma - 2nd Place, Ishan Mehta - 4th Place, Jay Mehta - 5th Place


• Michigan Elks Association Gold Key Scholarship Winners: Sara Davis & Richard Vermeulen


• MSBOA: For the second year, all three PHN bands qualified for MSBOA State Band Festival and earned straight 1's. Fewer than a dozen bands in Michigan had 3 or more bands earn straight 1's.
